Japanese master Hirokazu Kore-eda returns with Broker, a stunning familial drama that premiered to a 12-minute standing ovation at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

Led by the inimitable Song Kang-ho and Gang Dong-won, Broker explores the ideas of family through the phenomena of state-sponsored “baby boxes.” Sanctioned places for people to abandon their unwanted children, the baby boxes are commonplace throughout South Korea and Japan. Working at a church that houses one such baby box, Dong-soo (Dong-won) and Ha Sang-hyeon (Kang-ho) occasionally steal the abandoned babies to sell them on the adoption black market. But when a new mother, So-young, comes back after having abandoned her baby, the pair’s scheme begins to quickly unravel on itself

Song Kang-ho’s history-making performance made him the first Korean actor to win Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival, announcing Broker as a vital portrait of modernity in an increasingly globalized cinema.
