Steven Spielberg gave Whoopi Goldberg her breakout role in 1985’s The Color Purple, screening as part of our Mural Month.
An epic tale spanning forty years in the life of Celie (Whoopi Goldberg), a Black woman living in the South who survives incredible abuse and bigotry. After Celie’s abusive father marries her off to the equally debasing ‘Mister’ Albert Johnson (Danny Glover), things go from bad to worse, leaving Celie to find companionship anywhere she can. She perseveres, holding on to her dream of one day being reunited with her sister, Nettie (Akosua Busia) in Africa.
Featuring an original score by Quincy Jones, The Color Purple tackles its heavy themes with powerful performances and deep-hearted sentiment.
The Color Purple screens starting Friday, August 11th.
Friday, Aug 11th – 2pm
Saturday, Aug 12th – 1pm
