Be the best around and let no one ever bring you down with the next film in GutiFest — a series curated by our first ever guest programmer, Los Angeles Times Columnist Gustavo Arellano! It’s John G. Avildsen’s 1984 classic, The Karate Kid.
Daniel (Ralph Macchio), a fatherless teenager, arrives in Los Angeles and becomes subject to bullying by a gang of karate students after striking up a relationship with Ali (Elizabeth Shue), the gang leader’s ex-girlfriend. When Daniel asks Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita), a master of martial arts, to help him learn karate, it becomes all or nothing when Daniel takes to the task of defeating his bullies.
An unexpected sleeper hit and beginning of a franchise, The Karate Kid has inspired decades of viewers to fight with their heart instead of their fists.
The Karate Kid screens starting Friday, July 21st.
