Frank Capra: Mr. America

Frank Capra: Mr. America

On Thursday, July 25th, we are thrilled to partner with Art House Convergence to herald the return of Art House Theater Day (AHTD), a nationwide event where exhibitors and audiences alike come together to celebrate all the contributions that art house theaters and independent film make to our cultural landscape: ambitious and innovative art that provokes, challenges, entertains, and inspires.

Specially programmed for AHTD is filmmaker Jim White's 2023 documentary Frank Capra: Mr. America, a compelling film that delves into the life and legacy of one of Hollywood's most influential directors, Frank Capra. Known for his iconic films such as It's a Wonderful Life,, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and It Happened One Night, Capra's work is celebrated for its heartfelt storytelling, quintessentially American themes, and the triumph of the everyman. Through archival footage, interviews with contemporaries, and insights from film historians, the documentary explores Capra's journey from his humble beginnings as an immigrant in America, to becoming a defining voice in Hollywood's Golden Age.

A comprehensive portrait of Capra's impact on American cinema and culture, this new documentary has been well-received for its thorough and affectionate examination of Capra's career and contributions to the film industry and culture at large, highlighting how his films resonated with audiences during some of America's most challenging times, including the Great Depression and World War II, while also examining the complexities of his legacy. A must-watch for film enthusiasts and historians alike.

We thank our community of film lovers for all their support. See you this Art House Theater Day!
