Up next in our Edward Yang Retrospective is the director’s magisterial A Brighter Summer Day!

Set against the backdrop of 1960s Taipei, the film follows the tumultuous journey of a teenage boy named Hsiao Si’r (Chang Chen). As he navigates the challenges of adolescence, Hsiao Si’r becomes entangled in gang conflicts, family tensions, and his own inner turmoil. All the while, the broader socio-political upheavals of the time make their presence felt in his and his peers and loved ones’ lives.

Selected as the Taiwanese entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 64th Academy Awards, A Brighter Summer Day is frequently assessed as one of Yang’s finest works.
