Chal Mera Putt (2019), directed by Janjot Singh and starring Amrinder Gill, Simi Chahal, and Iftikhar Thakur, is a heartwarming Punjabi comedy-drama that delves into the experiences of Punjabi immigrants in the United Kingdom. The story follows a group of friends as they navigate the trials and tribulations of making a life in a foreign country without legal status. With warmth and humor, the film highlights the deep camaraderie that forms among immigrants who come together from diverse backgrounds, united by common struggles. Despite the hardships and the looming threat of deportation, they dream of a better future and find solace in each other’s company, making it a story of resilience and friendship.
Chal Mera Putt received praise for its authentic portrayal of the immigrant experience and its balanced mix of comedy and emotional depth, resonating deeply with audiences in both India and the diaspora. The film’s success led to a popular franchise, with sequels continuing the journey of these beloved characters. Its unique blend of cultural humor and universal themes of belonging and aspiration made it a standout in Punjabi cinema.
Opening Film: BAYWATANA
In 1996, many Afghan people, including members of religious minorities such as Hinduism, Sikhism, and Judaism, fled the country due to persecution. On March 25, 2020, ISIS raided a Sikh place of worship in Kabul, killing 25 people. There were several other attacks on other religious minorities by the radical Islamic group. This attack started an exodus of minority communities leaving Afghanistan, which was their home for centuries. Focusing on the loss of freedom of religion and security, this document will explore the lives of those who fled due to religious persecution. Director Harbaldeep Singh’s documentary Baywatana features members of the Sikh, Hindu, and Jews minority communities from Afghanistan who have immigrated to the USA and Canada, now Baywatana – Without a home and a country. The documentary further explores their current life as they try to take asylum in the West, the effect of this transition on their mental health, religious persecution in the 21st century, and the healing process after losing their loved ones and roots.
All Sikhlens films not in the English language will be presented with English subtitles.
