Our Surrealist Animation series continues with Heavy Metal, Gerald Potterton’s classic animated sci-fi anthology!
Weaving together multiple science fiction and fantasy stories, all are connected by a mysterious and malevolent green orb known as the Loc-Nar. Each segment, set in different times and worlds, explores the dark and surreal influence of the Loc-Nar as it brings chaos, violence, and corruption to those who encounter it. From a futuristic New York City plagued by crime to a dystopian wasteland ruled by a sadistic dictator, the film presents a variety of visually striking and often eroticized narratives.
With its distinctive blend of rock music, vivid animation, and adult themes, Heavy Metal stands out as a unique and influential animated film that captures the essence of 1980s counterculture.
