Join us as legendary singer/actor Ted Neeley joins us for the sixth — and final — time, as he makes the first stop in his Farewell Tour of director Norman Jewison’s 1973 musical classic Jesus Christ Superstar.
Neeley received a well-deserved Golden Globe nomination for his celebrated performance as Jesus in this 1973 film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic rock opera, which takes place place in the final weeks before Jesus’ arrest and crucifixion. This dazzling and powerful film is told mostly from the point of view of Judas Iscariot (a towering Carl Anderson, who received Golden Globe nominations for both Best Actor and Most Promising Newcomer), through Tim Rice’s moving libretto, and Lloyd Webber’s powerful score. The film presents political and interpersonal struggles between Judas, who is dissatisfied with the direction in which his friend is steering his disciples, and Jesus, whose enthused focus on his mission and message threatens the lives of all involved.
Shot entirely on location in Israel, the rock opera’s passionate lyrics are layered with contemporary attitudes, sensibilities, and slang, with anachronistic allusions to modern life intentionally scattered throughout the depiction of political events.
Ted Neeley will introduce the screening, and will join us in our lobby afterwards to meet with audience members. Don’t miss your final chance to experience Jesus Christ Superstar with Ted Neeley in person!
