In anticipation of their upcoming stage production, of the Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, our friends at South Coast Repertory present a special screening of director Frank Oz’s beloved 1986 big-screen adaptation, Little Shop of Horrors: The Director’s Cut!

Rick Moranis stars Seymour Krelborn (Rick Moranis), a meek flower shop assistant who discovers a strange and exotic plant that he names Audrey II, in loving tribute to his co-worker and crush, Audrey (Ellen Greene).  As Audrey II begins to grow, it attracts much-needed business to the flower shop — but what’s Seymour to do when he learns that Audrey II has a sinister appetite for human blood!? Desperate to keep the plant alive and his newfound success intact, Seymour begins to feed the plant with increasingly dire consequences. The film balances humor and horror, with memorable performances and catchy musical numbers, including the iconic “Suddenly, Seymour” and “Feed Me (Git It).” The film also features standout supporting roles from Steve Martin as the sadistic dentist Orin Scrivello, and Levi Stubbs as the voice of Audrey II.

Though not a major box office hit at the time of release, the film has since gained a cult following and is celebrated for its unique blend of musical theater and horror-comedy. A more faithful – and gleefully darker – adaptation of the original off-Broadway musical by Oscar-winners Ashman and Menken, the Director’s Cut version of this film finally provided audience with the show-stopping climax they’d been waiting for.  Experience all the musical mayhem on the big screen!
