Swing on over for The Hudsucker Proxy, our Film Club Manager Garret Cruz’s second In Defense Of… pick!
Norville Barnes (Tim Robbins) is a naive and ambitious mailroom clerk who is unexpectedly promoted to the position of president of Hudsucker Industries as part of a corporate scheme. Unbeknownst to him, the company’s board, led by the scheming Sidney J. Mussburger (Paul Newman), plans to drive the company’s stock down so they can buy it back cheaply. However, Norville’s seemingly ridiculous invention — a hula hoop — becomes a nationwide craze, turning the tables on the schemers.
Polarizing critics upon its initial release, The Hudsucker Proxy has since gained a devoted cult following thanks to its humorous sensibility and sumptuous Art Deco aesthetics.
