The Baltimorons

The Baltimorons is a mirthful and intimate holiday gem—Jay Duplass’s solo directorial debut since 2012—that transforms a cracked tooth into a night of transformative encounters. Against the wintry backdrop of Baltimore, an unlikely romance unfolds between a newly sober comedian and his reserved dentist in a walk-and-talk odyssey of quiet humor, emotional honesty, and offbeat charm.

Winner of SXSW’s Audience Award, this modestly magnetic film is both a gift to indie lovers and a tender celebration of connection in the most unexpected of hours.

Amores Perros: Presented By OCLIFF 2025

This year’s Orange County Latino International Film Festival (OCLIFF) returns Friday, September 19th – Sunday, September 21st! In anticipation of 2025’s full weekend of films celebrating the unique lens of the contemporary Latinx experience, join us Saturday, September 13th for a special matinee screening of Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Amores Perros–celebrating 25 years since its 2001 U.S. release!

Years before making history as only the third filmmaker to win back-to-back Best Director Oscars at the Academy Awards (for 2014’s Birdman and 2015’s The Revenant) – as well as being the first non-U.S.-born filmmaker to do so – Iñárritu’s debut feature Amores Perros took the world by storm, earning three awards at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as over 50 additional international film prizes.  A tragic car accident in Mexico City becomes the link between three seemingly separate lives: Octavio (Gael García Bernal), a young man desperate to escape his violent home life; Valeria (Goya Toledo), a glamorous model whose world unravels after an unexpected mishap; and El Chivo (Emilio Echevarría), a disillusioned hitman seeking redemption. A visceral and unflinching portrait of love and loss on the streets of Mexico City, Amores Perros is told through three interwoven stories connected by fate, betrayal, and more than a couple of ill-fated dogs.

Presented in Spanish, with English subtitles.

The Lovers on the Bridge

Leos Carax’s delirious saga The Lovers On The Bridge is coming to The Frida Cinema in a brand new 4K restoration!

The story traces the highs and lows of the passionate relationship that develops between a homeless artist (Juliette Binoche) who is losing her sight and a troubled, alcoholic street performer (Denis Lavant) living on Paris’s famed Pont-Neuf bridge. Capturing their romantic abandon with a giddy expressionist energy—especially in a wild dance sequence set against an explosion of fireworks— this whirlwind love story is an exhilarating journey through a relationship that confirmed Carax’s status as one of the leading lights of the post–New Wave French cinema.

This 4K restoration was carried out by TransPerfect Media from the original 35mm film negative and multi tracks. Color grading supervised by Caroline Champetier, sound by Thomas Guader. Project supervised by Sophie Boyer, Jean Pierre Boiget and the StudioCanal team. Digitization and restoration done with the support of the CNC and the participation of Theo Films.

North by Northwest

The penultimate film in our Technicolor Summer series takes a thrilling detour into espionage and mistaken identity with Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest—a sleek, suspenseful, and wildly entertaining ride across some of America’s most iconic landscapes.

Cary Grant stars as Roger Thornhill, a suave Manhattan ad executive who’s suddenly thrust into a deadly game of cat and mouse after being mistaken for a government agent. Framed, pursued, and utterly bewildered, Thornhill races from New York to Chicago to Mount Rushmore, dodging enemy spies, government secrets, and one unforgettable crop duster along the way. Along for the ride is the enigmatic Eve Kendall (Eva Marie Saint), whose loyalties—and affections—are anything but clear.

Directed with Hitchcock’s signature style and razor-sharp wit, North by Northwest is a masterclass in cinematic storytelling. Cool, clever, and endlessly rewatchable, North by Northwest is a Technicolor thrill ride that proves Hitchcock didn’t just master fear—he mastered fun.

In the early 1930s, the 3-strip Technicolor process was introduced to audiences, inviting them to experience a world dripping with vibrant saturation for the very first time. The Technicolor Summer series ranges from familiar classics to rarely-screened gems all Summer long!

Barry Lyndon

Candlelit salons. Blood-soaked battlefields. Icy corridors of fate. Enter the world of Stanley Kubrick’sBarry Lyndon (1975) returning to The Frida Cinema for its 50th anniversary in a brand new 4K restoration!

Adapted from the novel by William Makepeace Thackeray, Barry Lyndon charts the rise and fall of Redmond Barry (Ryan O’Neal), a penniless Irish rogue who schemes his way into 18th-century aristocracy—only to find that elegance, power, and wealth offer no refuge from the cruelty of fate. Kubrick renders this tragic picaresque with a painter’s eye, using natural light, period-accurate lenses, and stunning classical compositions to create what may be the most beautiful film ever made.

Critically misunderstood on its release but now hailed as a masterpiece, Barry Lyndon remains one of Kubrick’s boldest achievements: a work of immaculate control about a man who has none.

The Driver: Presented By Cinematic Void

Join our partners in crime at Cinematic Void for a high-octane night of neo-noir cool with a special screening of The Driver, Walter Hill’s ice-cold crime thriller that helped define the modern getaway film.

Ghost in the Shell

Before The Matrix, before Westworld—there was Ghost in the Shell. Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 cyberpunk landmark returns to the big screen for its 30th anniversary: a hypnotic, high-tech meditation on what it means to be alive in a world where the line between human and machine has all but vanished.

Set in a dystopian future where cybernetic enhancements are the norm and the human mind can be hacked, Ghost in the Shell follows Major Motoko Kusanagi—a special-ops agent in a synthetic body—on a mission to track a mysterious hacker known only as the Puppet Master. But as the investigation deepens, so does the existential dread: Where does the “self” reside when your body is hardware, your memories are code, and your soul—your ghost—is possibly just another program?

Blending hauntingly beautiful hand-drawn animation with early digital effects, Oshii’s vision is erily prescient. It’s a genre-defining anime that helped lay the groundwork for modern sci-fi as we know it.

These screenings will be presented in the film’s original Japanese language with English subtitles.
