The Frida Cinema’s In Defense Of… series continues with another film a member of our team feels is worthy of critical reconsideration,1992 live action/cartoon hybrid Cool World — selected by our Executive Director, Logan Crow!
A bizarre accident finds Frank Harris (Brad Pitt) landing in Cool World, a realm of cartoons. Years later, cartoonist Jack Deebs (Gabriel Byrne), who’s made a career out of drawing Cool World, crosses over as well. He sets his lustful sights on animated femme fatale Holli Would (Kim Basinger), but she’s got plans of her own to become real, and it’s up to Frank to stop her. Directed by legendary animator Ralph Bakshi, the film’s confusing narrative and mismatched tone contributed to it being a dud in the box office, only for it to achieve cult status and an army of defenders in the years to follow. Don’t miss this rarely-screened 90’s oddity at The Frida!
