When Mark (Sam Neill) returns home to West Berlin, he discovers that his wife Anna (Isabelle Adjani) wants a divorce, and that something far stranger than another man may be tearing their marriage apart. As their relationship spirals into obsession, jealousy, and violence, Mark begins to suspect that Anna is hiding a horrifying secret.
It’s unclassifiable, and yet…it’s a total masterpiece that finds its way back to our screens at least once a year. It’s is a fever dream of marital breakdown, anchored by two astonishing performances. Isabelle Adjani (winner of Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival that year) throws herself into one of cinema’s most legendary displays of emotional and physical extremity, while the late, great Sam Neill gives a raw performance that helped introduce audiences to a face they would come to know and love for the next forty years.
