Barbara Stanwyck is at her most captivating (and boy is that saying something) in Remember the Night, the bittersweet holiday classic from director Mitchell Leisen and legendary screenwriter Preston Sturges! And as an added bonus, film critic and author Alonso Duralde will be joining us to introduce the film and sign copies of his book Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas!
When shoplifter Lee Leander (Stanwyck) is arrested for stealing a bracelet just before Christmas, New York prosecutor John Sargent (Fred MacMurray) finds himself unexpectedly sympathetic to her case. After a trial delay sends them both home for the holidays, John takes Lee along for the journey, introducing her to his warm, welcoming family and an entirely different kind of Christmas.
Released in 1940, Remember the Night showcases Stanwyck’s remarkable ability to balance sharp-edged wit and emotional depth. Paired with MacMurray years before their iconic collaboration in Double Indemnity, this is a beautiful reminder of why she remains one of classic Hollywood’s all-time greats!
