Celebrate Pride Month with a signature themed cocktail and 30th anniversary FREE screening of The Celluloid Closet, presented by The 1 Productions, a documentary adaptation of Vito Russo’s groundbreaking book and lecture series exploring LGBTQ+ representation in film. This special presentation will feature an introduction by Leonardo Ostergren (Frida Board Member), and an engaging post-screening discussion panel moderated by Atalia Lopez (Chapman University Lecturer, Frida Board Member). Panelists include Angela Brinskele (The June L. Mazer Lesbian Archives), Ray Connelly (writer/director), Kenna Wong Ghaill (Art Theatre Long Beach), filmmaker Alisha Graefe, and Sam Hunter (UCLA Cinema and Media Studies scholar).
The Celluloid Closet is an epic story, by turns surprising, hilarious, and disturbing. Academy Award-winning filmmakers Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman assemble clips from over 100 Hollywood movies and interviews with many of the filmmakers and actors who created them (including Tom Hanks, Shirley MacLaine, Susan Sarandon, Whoopi Goldberg, Tony Curtis, and Gore Vidal).
The Frida Cinema is thrilled to host this screening in partnership with the June L. Mazer Lesbian Archives, who will also be tabling and displaying some neat historical materials before and after the screening.
