Celebrate Silent Movie Day with The Phantom Carriage, Victor Sjostrom’s 1921 horror classic.
The story centers on David Holm (Sjostrom), a bitter and abusive man who, on New Year’s Eve, encounters the ghostly driver of the titular phantom carriage. According to legend, the last person to die each year is doomed to drive the carriage and collect the souls of the dead for the next year. Through a series of flashbacks, David confronts the consequences of his cruel life and the people he has wronged, particularly his wife and a devoted Salvation Army worker.
Renowned for its innovative use of double exposure to create eerie, translucent ghostly images, The Phantom Carriage is a pioneering work in film history as well as an influence on the work of Ingmar Bergman.
