This gloriously dysfunctional family comedy follows the eccentric Tenenbaums, a clan of once-brilliant child prodigies whose adult lives have been anything but extraordinary. Estranged patriarch Royal (Gene Hackman) suddenly reappears after years of abandonment, claiming to be terminally ill in an attempt to win back his family. His return brings together his three troubled children: a gifted but emotionally withdrawn playwright (Ben Stiller), a tennis prodigy in the midst of a breakdown (Luke Wilson), and an adopted daughter harboring a lifetime of secrets (Gwyneth Paltrow).
Featuring an extraordinary ensemble cast, The Royal Tenenbaums is a meticulously crafted comedy about faded genius and second chances. With some of Wes’s most memorable characters in his filmography, this 2001 classic earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay and remains one of the defining films of the early 2000s indie-cinema boom.
