Hot Rod + MacGruber + Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping
From the minds of comedy trio The Lonely Island – Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone – comes a TRIPLE FEATURE of three hilarious 2000’s comedies — Hot Rod, MacGruber, and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping!
Directed by Schaffer, 2007’s Hot Rod stars Samberg as Rod Kimble, an amateur stuntman with delusions of grandeur. Rod’s dream is to emulate his late father, a legendary daredevil, by performing death-defying stunts — despite his complete lack of talent. When his stepfather Frank (Ian McShane) falls ill, Rod plans an epic jump to raise money for Frank’s heart surgery, hoping to earn his respect in the process. Featuring appearances by Taccone and Schaffer, and co-starring Isla Fisher as Rod’s love interest Denise, Hot Rod is celebrated for its irreverent but playful spoofing of inspirational sports dramas.
The hysterical spoofing continues with Taccone’s 2010 MacGruber, a riotous action-comedy starring Will Forte as the titular inept, yet self-assured, special government operative. A parody of Forte’s classic Saturday Night Live character, a retired MacGruber is called back into action to thwart his arch-nemesis, Dieter Von Cunth (a scene-stealing Val Kilmer), who has stolen a nuclear warhead. Joined by his loyal teammates Vicki St. Elmo (Kristen Wiig) and Dixon Piper (Ryan Phillippe), MacGruber embarks on a series of outrageous and incompetently executed missions. Taccone infuses the film with over-the-top humor and ridiculous scenarios, creating a comedy that is both a loving homage and a satirical take on 1980s action films. Despite initial mixed reviews upon its release, MacGruber has garnered a dedicated cult following for its unabashed silliness and memorable one-liners.
Our triple-feature closes with 2016’s Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, directed by Schaffer and Taccone. A satirical mockumentary that hilariously skewers the music industry, Popstar stars Samberg as Conner4Real, a former boy band member turned solo superstar whose latest album flops disastrously. Desperate to maintain his fame, Conner embarks on a series of increasingly absurd promotional stunts, all captured by a documentary crew. The film features cameos from numerous real-life musicians and celebrities, adding to its authentic yet absurd feel. Co-starring Schaffer and Taccone as Conner’s former bandmates, Popstar is praised for its sharp wit, clever parody, and surprisingly catchy original songs, solidifying The Lonely Island’s reputation for innovative comedy.
