The Substance

Coralie Fargeat’s smash hit sci-fi satire The Substance returns for a fresh round of encores hot off of its five Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Makeup And Hairstyling!

Moore plays Elisabeth Sparkle, a fading celebrity who, desperate to regain her youthful looks, turns to a mysterious black-market drug known as “The Substance.” This cell-replicating liquid temporarily creates a younger, enhanced version of those who ingest it — but their rejuvenation comes with horrifying consequences.

Blending satirical commentary on society’s obsession with beauty and aging with shocking body horror elements, Fargeat’s visual storytelling, and the film’s bold performances – particularly from Moore – have garnered early praise following its premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where it took home the award for Best Screenplay. The Substance is a bold and unsettling exploration of the lengths people will go to defy aging, with Fargeat continuing to push boundaries in the horror genre.
