Wild at Heart

Our hearts continue to ache with the passing of visionary filmmaker David Lynch, as we present Wild at Heart, his 1990 romantic black comedy.

After serving prison time for a self-defense killing, Sailor Ripley (Nicolas Cage) reunites with girlfriend Lula Fortune (Laura Dern). Lula’s mother, Marietta (Diane Ladd), desperate to keep them apart, hires a hitman (J. E. Freeman) to kill Sailor. But he finds a whole new set of troubles when he and Bobby Peru (Willem Dafoe), an old buddy who’s also out to get Sailor, try to rob a store. When Sailor lands in jail yet again, the young lovers appear further than ever from the shared life they covet.

Adapted from the novel of the same name by Barry Gifford, Wild at Heart earned a mixed reception upon release but has since been reassessed a key entry in Lynch’s filmography.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me

Continuing to shine a spotlight on our dearly departed David Lynch, we have added final encores of his unsung masterpiece Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

In the town of Twin Peaks, everyone has their secrets—but especially Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee). In this prequel to his groundbreaking 1990s television series, David Lynch resurrects the teenager found wrapped in plastic at the beginning of the show, following her through the last week of her life and teasing out the enigmas that surround her murder. Homecoming queen by day and drug-addicted thrill seeker by night, Laura leads a double life that pulls her deeper and deeper into horror as she pieces together the identity of the assailant who has been terrorizing her for years.

Nightmarish in its vision of an innocent torn apart by unfathomable forces, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me is nevertheless one of Lynch’s most humane films, aching with compassion for its tortured heroine—a character as enthralling in life as she was in death.

The People's Joker + Q&A w/ Vera Drew

The People’s Joker is back at The Frida, and this time we’ve got a very special treat for you: writer/director Vera Drew is joining us in-person for a Q&A after the film moderated by Louise Weard, director of the Castration Movie Anthology!

Set in a dystopian Gotham City, the film follows Vera, played by Drew herself, who aspires to become the first openly trans comedian. Struggling with oppressive societal norms and personal demons, Vera undergoes a transformative journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Infused with dark humor, surreal visuals, and a satirical edge, “The People’s Joker” challenges traditional narratives and delivers a poignant message about authenticity and resilience.

Don’t miss your chance to see one of 2024’s most outrageous (and best) films on the big screen!
