Our second Volunteer Of The Month pick of March comes courtesy of Ben, who has selected the hilarious Abrahams/Zucker satire Top Secret! starring the one and only Val Kilmer!
Popular and dashing American singer Nick Rivers travels to East Germany to perform in a music festival. When he loses his heart to the gorgeous Hillary Flammond, he finds himself caught up in an underground resistance movement. Rivers joins forces with Agent Cedric and Flammond to attempt the rescue of her father, Dr. Paul, from the Germans, who have captured the scientist in hopes of coercing him into building a new naval mine.
Overshadowed slightly in the Abrahams/Zucker canon of comedy classics by the likes of Airplane! or the Naked Gun movies, Top Secret has gained cult classic over the years and makes for a hilarious time at the movies!

Hot off of its Academy Award for International Feature Film, Walter Salles’ I’m Still Here is finally making its way to The Frida Cinema!
Starring the incomparable Fernanda Torres (also nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars), the story is set in 1971, when Brazil’s military dictatorship has reached its height. The Paiva family — Rubens, Eunice, and their five children — live in a beachside house in Rio, open to all their friends. One day, Rubens is taken for questioning and does not return.

Chantal Akerman Month winds down with 1982’s Toute Une Nuit, a hypnotic, atmospheric portrait of longing and fleeting connections over the course of a single summer night in Brussels.
The film unfolds as a series of vignettes depicting strangers, lovers, and lonely individuals moving through dimly lit streets, cafés, and apartments, engaging in brief encounters—some passionate, some melancholic, some wordless. Akerman’s poetic, observational style turns these ephemeral moments into a deeply immersive and evocative cinematic experience.

Described as a “Rock & Roll Fable” by its director Walter Hill, 1984’s Streets of Fire is an essential inclusion in our Unsung 80’s Soundtracks series. Michael Paré stars as Tom Cody, a tough-as-nails mercenary finds himself pulled back into a life he left behind when his former girlfriend, rock star Ellen Aim (Diane Lane), is kidnapped by motorcycle gang leader Raven Shaddock (Willem Dafoe). Enlisted by Ellen’s manager Billy Fish (Rick Moranis), Tom joins forces with his former partner McCoy (Weapons Oscar-winner Amy Madigan), and sets out into the neon-lit, rain-soaked streets of the city to rescue her.

Blending rock & roll, comic-book melodrama, and 1950s street-gang mythology, Streets of Fire features original songs mixed in with 80’s staples such as Dan Hartman’s “I Can Dream About You,” as well as performances by the Blasters, Ry Cooder, and others, ultimately earning its cult status as something of a rock concert wrapped around a plot.
