La Chimera follows Arthur (Josh O’Connor), a disheveled British archaeologist recently released from prison, as he drifts back into the orbit of a ragtag band of tombaroli—tomb raiders who plunder ancient Etruscan ruins in search of artifacts to sell on the black market. Haunted by visions of his lost love and the ghosts of a vanished world, Arthur embarks on a journey that blurs the lines between past and present, myth and memory.

Infused with Rohrwacher’s signature blend of earthy magic realism, La Chimera is an excavation of the soul and an absolute can’t-miss on the big screen with your fellow Student Film Club members!

Since the 1980s, the video shop has been a desperately necessary space for film culture. In Videoheaven, Alex Ross Perry tells the story of the neighbourhood video shop to consider wider, changing social histories, using appropriated footage from the high and lowbrow.

In anticipation of our upcoming run of the new 4K Restoration of visionary French filmmaker Leos Carax’s The Lovers on the Bridge (Sept 12 – 18), we are pleased to treat our Film Club Members with a rare opportunity to experience his 1986 masterpiece Mauvais sang (Bad Blood) on the big screen!

In a near-future Paris, residents are gripped with fear by a mysterious sexually transmitted plague.  A dying gangster enlists young thief Alex (Denis Lavant) to steal the serum that could mean humanity’s salvation. Caught between underworld rivalries, the shadow of his late father, and the suffocating weight of expectation, Alex navigates a landscape of danger and deceit that becomes even more complicated when he encounters Anna (Juliette Binoche), the much younger mistress of his employer, sparking a chain of events that threaten both their lives.

A stylish and surreal blend of crime drama, romantic fable, and pop-art cinematic poetry, Carax’s 1986 award-winner is a feverish meditation on love, risk, and mortality that cemented him as one of cinema’s great modern romantics.

Dario Argento returned to the giallo in 1982 with Tenebrae, his most brutal, self-reflexive, and psychologically unhinged film to date. An American crime novelist arrives in Rome to promote his latest book, only to find that someone is using his fiction as a blueprint for real murders. Wildly silly yet surprisingly sincere, Nacho Libre is a raucous underdog tale full of slapstick humor, colorful characters, and Jack Black at his most gloriously unhinged.

You don’t have to go to another world to find terror. It’s already here. Our friends at See It On 16mm are unspooling Don Coscarelli’s cult classic Phantasm—a sci-fi-infused nightmare that defies logic and lingers long after the credits roll.

Released in 1979 and unlike anything else in the horror landscape, Phantasm follows two brothers grappling with death, loss, and something far stranger—an otherworldly mortician known only as the Tall Man (the iconic Angus Scrimm), who haunts their local cemetery with an army of hooded dwarves, chrome sentinel spheres, and inter-dimensional secrets that feel like a dream you can’t wake up from.

Phantasm is a low-budget cosmic horror fever dream filled with and a pervasive sense of dread that hits on an emotional frequency few horror films even attempt.
