Our first Volunteer of the Month pick for November comes courtesy of Curtis, who has chosen To Kill a Mockingbird, the 1962 classic starring Gregory Peck! 

Scout Finch, 6 years old, and her older brother Jem live in sleepy Maycomb, Alabama, spending much of their time with their friend Dill and spying on their reclusive and mysterious neighbor, Boo Radley. When Atticus, their widowed father and a respected lawyer, defends a black man named Tom Robinson against fabricated rape charges, the trial and tangent events expose the children to evils of racism and stereotyping.\

Based on Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, it’s a powerful story of standing up for what’s right…even when the odds are stacked against you.

From Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, two of the co-directors behind the Oscar-winning No Other Land, comes Naza, an urgent new documentary investigating the systems behind Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 2026 Venice Film Festival, the film offers a chilling look at modern warfare through the testimony of Israeli intelligence officers and soldiers who helped select targets and calculate anticipated civilian casualties.

Filmed in secret conversations on Tel Aviv rooftops, these anonymous insiders describe a system where algorithms, surveillance technology, and bureaucratic calculations shape life-and-death decisions. The title refers to military terminology for “collateral damage”, a phrase that takes on devastating meaning when the human cost is laid bare.

A vital, deeply unsettling work of investigative filmmaking, Naza demands to be seen and confronted. Join us at The Frida Cinema for a documentary that asks what happens when the machinery of war makes the unthinkable routine.

As we turn the corner towards the end of our Art House 101: Global Queer Cinema series, we’re celebrating one of the essential voices of contemporary queer cinema with a double feature from French filmmaker Céline Sciamma: Water Lilies + Tomboy.

Sciamma’s debut feature, Water Lilies, plunges into the charged world of teenage desire, where a sexual awakening can feel impossibly intense. When Marie befriends Floriane, the star of a local synchronized swimming team, she becomes fascinated by her new friend, even as Floriane’s complicated relationship with her own sexuality begins to blur the boundaries between admiration and desire.

Then, in Tomboy, Sciamma turns her gaze toward gender identity through the eyes of a ten-year-old child. After moving to a new neighborhood, Laure introduces herself to the other children as “Michaël,” beginning to navigate friendships, play, and first love while keeping her secret from her family. What begins as a simple childhood game gradually becomes a tender exploration of discovering who you might be.

Long before Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Sciamma was already making some of the most quietly radical films about queer desire and identity. This double feature is an exemplary early showcase of her extraordinary talent.

Our second Volunteer of the Month pick comes courtesy of Steve, who has chosen Cameron Crowe’s 2000 love letter to rock’n’roll Almost Famous!

In 1973, a precocious 15-year-old aspiring rock journalist lands a dream assignment from Rolling Stone to tour with a rising rock band, embarking on a coming-of-age journey as he discovers the exhilarating and heartbreaking realities behind rock stardom.

Featuring Frances McDormand, Billy Crudup, Jason Lee, and Philip Seymour Hoffman as legendary rock critic Lester Bangs, and Kate Hudson in the unforgettable role of Penny Lane, this semi-autobiographical coming-of-age classic won Crowe an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, and gave us one of cinema’s greatest looks into the adventure of being in the band.

Plunging into the 1970s Berlin underground, this unforgettable portrait stands as one of the most harrowing films ever made about drug addiction. Based on the true story of Christiane Felscherinow, whose shocking memoir made her the face of a generation of troubled German youth, this bracing dramatization follows the alienated thirteen-year-old Christiane (Natja Brunckhorst) as she goes from popping pills to shooting heroin amid West Berlin’s infamous club scene. An instant cult sensation on account of its authentically grimy location shooting and electrifying soundtrack by David Bowie, Christiane F. (original title: Christiane F.: Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo) remains a haunting vision of a young life in free fall.

As part of our Unsung 80’s Soundtracks series, we will be presenting Janus Films’ new 4K digital restoration, approved by director Uli Edel, featuring a new 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. The soundtrack album is essentially a David Bowie compilation created around the film, rather than a conventional original film score. Bowie also recorded the German-language version of “Heroes,” “Helden,” specifically for the German market/film connection. Bowie also appears as himself in concert footage, and his music is deeply woven into the film’s atmosphere and Christiane’s obsession with him.
