Stay out of the water and head to The Frida Cinema this 4th of July week for Steven Spielberg’s classic adventure-thriller Jaws!
Based on the bestselling novel by Peter Benchley, Jaws stars Roy Scheider as Martin Brody, the police chief of idyllic New England tourist town Amity Island. When a young woman is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping, Brody wants to close the beaches in the interest of safety—but the town’s mayor (Murray Hamilton) overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town. As more shark attacks plague the beaches, Brody—in part driven by guilt for kowtowing to the mayor—partners up with ichthyologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled ship captain Quint (Robert Shaw) to catch the shark, and the trio embark in an epic sea battle of man vs. nature.
Winner of three Academy Awards for its sound, editing, and iconic John Williams score, Jaws was a sensation that was seen by 67 million people in the U.S. when it was initially released, making it the first summer “blockbuster,” and is one of only six horror films to date to be nominated the Academy Award for Best Picture. Voted as the 6th Scariest Film of All Time by Entertainment Weekly, Jaws is a timeless masterpiece brimming with excellent performances, charming moments of trademark-Spielberg levity and grace, and more than a few opportunities to jump out of your seat and spill your popcorn.
“When it comes to this kind of thriller, no movie has been able to top Jaws, although many have tried. And, as the years go by, it seems increasingly unlikely that anything will come close.” — James Berardinelli, ReelViews
“Robert Shaw [is] absolutely magnificent as a coarse fisherman finally hired to locate the Great White Shark; and Richard Dreyfuss, in another excellent characterization as a likeable young scientist.” — Variety
“One of the most effective thrillers ever made.” — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
