The Seduction of Mimi

He’s been a husband, a lover, a cuckold and a Communist. Now he just wants to be free.

The raucous sex comedy The Seduction of Mimi is coming to The Frida Cinema in a brand new 4K restoration!

The film, which brought international fame to director Lina Wertmuller (Swept Away), centers on sad sack Mimi, a Sicilian laborer whose refusal to vote for the Mafia’s candidate leads him to lose his job, his wife, and his home. At rock bottom, he revives his spirits by falling in love with the beautiful, radical Fiorella, with whom he starts a new life as a reliable husband and father. But the past comes back to haunt him, piling on comical complexities as all his energies surge into defending his honor, an obsession that has horrendous but hilarious consequences.

A blistering satire of Italy in the 1970s, The Seduction of Mimi takes aim at a corrupt government, compromised labor leaders and the Neanderthal sexual politics of men in power, with uproarious results.

“Deep wild humor… hilarious…one of the year’s ten best.”

Double-Blind (No Sex Last Night): Free Screening

We are presenting a free screening of Sophie Calle & Greg Shephard’s documentary/art experiment Double Blind (No Sex Last Night)!

Armed with camcorders, French artist Sophie Calle and American photographer Greg Shephard head West across the United States in his Cadillac convertible to produce and document a narrative of their journey and relationship. Independently, they create a kind of cinematic diary where two completely different emotional realities begin to emerge…

A fascinating intersection between autobiographical filmmaking and conceptual art, Calle was already internationally known for work that specialized in blurred surveillance, and this film extended those themes into deeply, deeply uncomfortable territory.

“Sophie Calle: Overshare” is the French artist’s first Orange County exhibition put on by our friends at UC Irvine Langson Orange County Museum of Art. Make sure to catch it before it closes on May 24th!

Killer Condom

We’re celebrating 30 years since the release of Killer Condom with a one-off late night screening of the unseen original director’s cut in a new 4K restoration!

In one of the seediest parts of Midtown Manhattan, the male patrons of the aptly-named Hotel Quickie keep getting their genitals bitten off by some mysterious unseen force. Assigned to the case by his superiors, the gay Sicilian-born cop Luigi Mackeroni is skeptical of the rumors that a carnivorous condom is on the loose…or at least until he himself is maimed by one of the man-eating prophylactics during an encounter with a young rent boy at the hotel. As the Big Apple is besieged by an entire army of ravenous rubbers, Mackeroni must find a way to put an end to the escalating emasculation epidemic!

Based on the best-selling adult comic by Germany’s Ralf König and featuring special effects by notorious splatter master Jörg Buttgereit and creative consulting from the legendary H. R. Giger, Martin Walz’s Killer Condom is a delirious queer horror comedy!

Big Trouble in Little China

Jack Burton’s in for some serious trouble…and you’re in for some serious fun.

We’ve added a couple late night 40th anniversary encores of John Carpenter and Kurt Russell’s 1986 cult classic Big Trouble In Little China!

Truck driver Jack Burton gets embroiled in a supernatural battle when his best friend Wang Chi’s green-eyed fiancée is kidnapped by henchmen of the sorcerer Lo Pan, who must marry a girl with green eyes in order to return to the human realm.

This kind of Kung Fu-Western-Sci Fi-Action-Horror genre mashing is common now, but in the 1980s, it was unheard of. Big Trouble In Little China embraced the chaos then, and has become even more beloved as the years have worn on. Come see it on the big screen!
