Signs

It’s not like they didn’t warn us.

Our first Volunteer of the Month pick for June comes courtesy of Jasmine, who has picked legendary filmmaker M Night Shyamalan’s 2002 nerve-shredding Sci Fi thriller Signs!

Set on an isolated Pennsylvania farm, the film follows former minister Graham Hess (Mel Gibson) as he and his family begin discovering enormous crop circles appearing in their fields. As strange lights, unsettling broadcasts, and inexplicable encounters begin mounting across the globe, Graham, his brother Merrill (Joaquin Phoenix), and his children are forced to confront the terrifying possibility that something is watching them from the darkness beyond the cornfields.

Mixing an alien invasion spectacle movie with an intimate story about grief, Signs is as masterfully tense as it is emotional. There’s nothing quite like seeing an M Night movie on the big screen.

Steal This Story, Please!

Undeterred by armed soldiers, evasive politicians, and riot police, journalist Amy Goodman has reported some of the most consequential stories of our time. Steal This Story, Please! is a gripping portrait of the trailblazer whose unwavering commitment to truth-telling spans three decades of turbulent history. From the frontlines of global conflicts to the organized chaos of her daily news show Democracy Now!, Goodman broadcasts stories and voices routinely silenced by commercial media.

Oscar-nominated filmmakers Carl Deal and Tia Lessin (Trouble the Water, The Janes) take us behind the scenes with the warm, wisecracking granddaughter of an Orthodox rabbi–raised in a tradition of asking hard questions–as she navigates a news landscape reshaped by technology, corporate consolidation, and political assaults on the press…and on truth itself.

Urgent, provocative and unexpectedly funny, Steal This Story, Please! is both a call to action and a celebration of resistance, posing the question: what happens to democracy when the press surrenders to power?

Serial Mom

Every mom wants to be wanted, but not for murder!

Our John Waters retrospective is reaching its bittersweet conclusion with us screening his 1994 suburban nightmare-comedy Serial Mom!

Beverly Sutphin seems like the perfect housewife: devoted mother, loving spouse, and model member of her community. But behind her cheerful demeanor lies a deadly secret…she has a habit of murdering anyone who offends her sense of decency, from rude neighbors to ill-mannered strangers, all while maintaining her pristine suburban image.

Serial Mom proves once again that in Waters’ world, good taste is meant to be destroyed, and Kathleen Turner’s iconic performance as Beverly finds both of him having a lot of fun being bad. Please join us to give this series the send-off it deserves!
