The Descent

A bone-chilling thrill ride for claustrophobes and gorehounds alike, The Frida Cinema is proud to present Neil Marshall’s The Descent–celebrating 20 years since its initial release! If you’ve never had the privilege of seeing this film on the big screen with a crowd, now is the bloody time!

After a personal tragedy, Sarah joins her friends on a caving expedition in the Appalachian Mountains. But when a rockfall traps them deep underground, their adventure turns into a nightmare. As they search for a way out, the group discovers they are not alone—lurking in the darkness are savage, cave-dwelling creatures. With rising tension and dwindling trust, the women must fight to survive against both the predators and each other.

One of the most acclaimed horror films of the 2000s, The Descent traps audiences in a suffocating nightmare of pitch-black corridors, mixing raw survival drama with bursts of savage violence. No spoilers!

Premiering at this year’s South By Southwest, the film’s trailer gathered one million views in just its first four days, with its global interest only further piqued by its current 95% Rotten Tomatoes rating!  Catch it on the big screen at The Frida!

The Frida will be donating a portion of ticket proceeds from our Thursday, October 2nd screening of Good Boy to OC Animal Allies!  OC Animal Allies is a nonprofit organization founded with the mission to save animal lives and strengthen the human-animal bond in Orange County by providing emergency financial support, education, referral services, and therapy programs.

Fright Night

Bad neighbors…beware! Tom Holland’s Fright Night, the wickedly funny cult classic that brought vampires screaming into the 1980s, returns to the big screen at The Frida for its 40th Anniversary!

All-American teen Charley Brewster (William Ragsdale) thinks he’s got it made—until he discovers that the mysterious stranger who just moved in next door is actually a vampire (Chris Sarandon, in suavely sinister form). With no one believing him, Charley turns to a washed-up late-night horror host, Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall), for help. Together, they must take on the undead lurking right next door before Charley’s friends—and even his girlfriend—fall under the vampire’s thrall.

Loaded with practical effects and gothic atmosphere, Fright Night is both a love letter to classic horror and a blood-soaked thrill ride that still bites hard (in a good way).

Creepers

The Black Gloves And Crimson Gloves series was created around the idea that director Dario Argento’s masterpiece, Deep Red, was turning a landmark 50 years old. But at Frida HQ, the secret reason for the celebratory retrospective was to showcase one of our favorite movies of all time, now celebrating its own 40th anniversary–Creepers!

Released in the U.S. as Creepers, this aggressively re-edited cut of the film Phenomena trims Argento’s operatic vision down to a leaner, grindhouse-ready form—but loses none of its mad brilliance. Jennifer Connelly plays a Swiss boarding school student with a psychic link to insects, who finds herself investigating a series of grisly murders alongside a wheelchair-bound entomologist (Donald Pleasence, plus a monkey sidekick). What unfolds is a delirious blend of supernatural horror, murder mystery, and coming-of-age nightmare. Oh, and did we mention the soundtrack? The most underrated Goblin score of all time, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Bill Wyman–just to name a few!

More streamlined but no less surreal, Creepers is a fractured mirror of Phenomena—a curiosity from the VHS era that still crawls under your skin. Kick off your Spooky Season the right way.
